People from all walks of life enjoy the benefits of cycling
Re: “Many residents can't use bike lanes,” Letters, Oct. 5
I wonder when Donna Carter last rode a bike? She writes that many people can't cycle: “most seniors, mentally or physically handicapped, parents taking kids to school or daycare, anyone on call — doctors, nurses, people buying groceries, people going out at night for entertainment and I'm sure many more … I would estimate fewer than two per cent of our population would use bike lanes.”
I have cycled with many seniors, and every morning see dozens of parents biking their children to school and daycare. I know many doctors who bike to work daily, and I have often cycled to buy groceries. I even cycle when I go out at night for entertainment. With this beautiful weather, the bike lanes are packed in the morning with people.
Ms. Carter seems to feel that cycling has so many limitations. But when I bike I don't feel limited; I feel free. John Valentine, Edmonton
