Even `frugal' bike-lane option is far too costly and frivolous

Apparently, we have some students of psychology on city council. As recently reported, they are currently considering two options, one, a fast-tracked $170-million 100-kilometre bike-lane project, that would have to skip the consultation process but could be completed by 2026. The second, a more “frugal” $130-million, 130-km project that wouldn't be completed till 2030.

Despite the exorbitant costs associated with both proposals, it appears council is hoping the “anchoring bias” will kick in as taxpayers weigh out the options and decide that compared to the $170-million/100-km project, the $130-million/130-km project seems like a pretty good deal.

Just a heads-up to the amateur psychologists in chambers. In a city that has trouble maintaining core services, I can assure you that the majority of taxpayers feel that either are frivolous and unaffordable endeavours at this time. No consultation process required. Al Willey, Edmonton
