Hard to understand all the fuss about feds' gun buyback plan

Bob Johnston, Edmonton

Mr. Tyler Shandro is making a big deal about the federal voluntary buyback of military-style automatic weapons. The first word is important. There will be no searches, no disruption of the normal life of taxpayers. Most of these guns are owned by criminals. They will not be lining up for buybacks.

Next will be collectors. Some of these people will line up. Some people will be surprised to find that they have one. Some RCMP detachments will not see any of these transactions in a normal year. In the larger centres, they could see three or four a week. Not a great strain on resources. Barely a tempest in a teapot.
