A Calgary man is facing charges after federal officials discovered $3.6-million worth of methamphetamine allegedly being smuggled across the U.S.-Canada border at Coutts.

Following a secondary examination of a commercial transport vehicle on Feb. 19, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) personnel seized 300 kg of the drug hidden in boxes in the vehicle's rear.

“This significant methamphetamine seizure, one of the agency's largest in the last five years, is a great example of our officers' resolve in keeping dangerous drugs out of our communities,” Benjamin Tame, CBSA director for southern Alberta and Saskatchewan, said in a news release.

Paramjit Laroyia, 49, is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, importation of a controlled substance and smuggling into Canada.

He was scheduled to appear Thursday in Lethbridge provincial court.
